NWI Timeline

  • 1970- F5 Lubbock tornado causes 26 fatalities and over $100 million in damage; most destructive U.S. tornado to that time.
  • 1970- The Wind Engineering research program is established as the Institute for Disaster Research (IDR).
  • 1976- The first International Tornado Symposium is held to discuss tornadoes and wind hazards.
  • 1985- 5th U.S. National Conference in Wind Engineering is held in Lubbock, Texas.
  • 2003- The 11th International Conference on Wind Engineering is held in Lubbock, Texas. Dr. Andy Swift becomes the new Director of WISE.
  • 2011- A Bachelor’s degree in Wind Energy is launched at TTU.
  • 2012- The National Wind Institute (NWI) at TTU was established.
