Research Facilities

  • Scaled Wind Farm Technology (SWiFT) Facility- The SWiFT Facility creates a research-scale wind farm to perform research and testing for both public and proprietary projects in the wind energy field.
  • TTUKa Radars- The two mobile research Doppler systems are designed to map fine-scale atmospheric flows relevant to engineering application.
  • West Texas Mesonet (WTM)- The WTM serves the greater West Texas Region by providing accurate and timely agricultural ans meteorological data to a wide variety of users.
  • Wind Tunnel- The Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel is a closed-circuit wind tunnel capable of generating wind speeds up to 110 mph.
  • VorTECH- This facility is designed to stimulate tornadic winds in the mid-Enhanced Fujita Scale three (EF3) range (or about 150 mph) which is the maximum speed for more than 90% of all tornadoes.
  • Debris Impact Facility- The Debris Impact Facility performs full scale debris impact testing utilizing an air cannon to launch projectiles at wall and roof assemblies, and manufactured shelters.
  • StickNet- This is a student-designed meteorological platform that is deployed in the direct path of landfalling hurricanes and thunderstorms.
